Obituary

Carolyn Rosemary Petten

1936-2025

Carolyn Rosemary Petten (nee Balsom) had a quiet spirit and a strong faith and was a kind and loving person who made a lasting impression on everyone she met. She was born in Clarenville, Newfoundland, the eighth of nine siblings. As a young woman she moved to Port de Grave as a teacher and met Lester Petten. On December 27th, 1956, they married and together they raised four children. She enjoyed the many hours she spent participating in the fishery by working down on the stage and flakes cleaning and drying fish.

Mom loved her family and always enjoyed cooking and hosting family and friends. She was known for her toutons and fried fish as well as many other traditional meals. She was always excited to share those meals with the many friends her family invited. Mom had a way of making them feel like family.

Mom loved to travel, especially with family. She particularly enjoyed the two cruises she did with all her children and grandchildren, she always talked about it even in the last few days of her life. She also traveled to Europe with Aunt Pat and her two daughters and raved about the sights and experiences from that trip.

Mom was a Maple Leafs and a Blue Jays fan and absolutely loved watching games on TV. She always enjoyed chatting about the score of the game with her grandchildren, especially if her team beat theirs.

One of the cherished memories of her children is spending New Years Day 2025 with mom, the first time they had all been together for New Years dinner in over 25 years; a dinner cooked by mom.

Carolyn is predeceased by her husband Lester, parents Alfred and Nellie Balsom, parents in law Henry and Emmie Petten, siblings Florence, Ralph, Fred, Patricia, David, Linfield, Doll, Ann, and step-brother Reginald, brothers in law Vern and Lewis, sisters in law, Eileen and Doreen, and her great granddaughter Norah Patey.

She is mourned by her children Karen (Graham Milley), Donna (Lindsey Anstey), Glenn (Valerie), and Renelle (Dave Cochrane), grandchildren Erin (Gavin), Chad (Ashley), Adam (Victoria), Krista (TJ), Mark (Kaila), Jared (Emily), Sydney (Ryan), Taylor (Andrew), great grandchildren Luke, Thomas, Sterling, Ava, Harrison, and Amelia, sisters in law Clarice, Velva (Dolf), Beulah (Chesley), and a large extended family of nieces, nephews and friends.

The family extends their heartfelt gratitude to the nurses, doctors, and staff of ICU and 7 West at St. Clare's Mercy Hospital for their exceptional care and compassion during Carolyn's final days.

She will be resting in the Church Sanctuary of the Pentecostal Tabernacle, Port de Grave on Sunday, April 20th, 2025 from 2:00pm - 5:00pm, and 7:00pm - 9:00pm.
