The Lord called Mom home on Monday, August 18th, 2025. With her son Rich daughter-in-law Caroline, who she thought of as a daughter, niece Catherine and husband Steve, who were very dear to Mom by her side.
Mom was born on Roaches Line on March 1st, 1945, to her loving parents James & Mary (Flaherty). She grew up with her mom, dad and big sister Johannah. Mom went to school on the Goulds Road where she began many lifelong friendships. Mom would tell me stories of her days in school and about the friends she made with students & teachers that lasted until this day.
On August 4, 1962, Mom married the love of her life, our dad, Nicholas. They built their first house next to her mom & dad's and they raised five children together there until they bought their new home in Brigus. Although she had moved, she kept in contact with her parents every day and took them visiting, shopping, to doctors' appointments, Sunday drives &helped them with whatever they needed. When Dad got sick and could no longer work, Mom started work at Marshalls Retirement Home on the main road in Brigus. She loved taking care of the residents and made a lifelong friendship with Mr. And Mrs. Marshall. Mom & Dad both enjoyed going for boil ups with friends & family. Some of their favorite places were Bellevue Beach and Northern Bay Sands to name a few. Mom & Dad had made many friends throughout their years together and loved company. Especially every night for a game of 120.
When Dads illness progressed, Mom had become his caregiver. They spent all their time together. They loved a game of cards with just the two of them or a full table. Almost every night on Roaches Line the house was full for a game of 120.
Mom had only one sibling, her sister Johannah, they both shared a special relationship right up until Johannah's passing in May of this year. After they both married, they became neighbors on Roaches Line for many years until our family moved to Brigus. Mom & Aunt Joan adored each other's children and were even godmothers to a few of each other's kids. Mom & Aunt Joan would have their spats & squabbles like all other siblings, but they never lasted long, they talked almost every day most days more than once and sometimes for hours.
Mom loved knitting & crocheting. She had a real god given talent that she had even taught to others. Many people would often call on mom with sewing and knitting projects when they needed help. Over the years, Mom had crafted many beautiful blankets, sweaters, tablecloths, slippers, mittens, doilies, and many more creations that she would gift to her children & grandchildren, and many more loved ones. Dad would also help Mom when she made her blankets on the sewing machine. Years ago, they both made Jesse a Pokeman quilt and me a beautiful quilt of strips of fabric that sits on my bed that i will cherish forever. Mom also liked to write. In the '70's and '80's, she contributed to a column in the compass newpaper for weddings, birthdays, anniversaries and obituary announcements, always ending her events with "a good time was had by all".
After Dad died, Mom had to navigate a new normal without her best friend and card partner. That's when she joined the 50 plus club. She enjoyed the friendships, trips, and all the activities they did. It brought Mom many hours of happiness to have the company of the other members.
Mom was a strong, independent & fiercely stubborn woman. She lived on her own after Dad passed, took care of her everyday needs & even drove her own car at eighty years of age, and up until her fall in June of this year. She loved & worshipped her Lord, loved her family & friends, and animals, especially her many pets throughout the years. She had a special love & relationship with each of her six grandchildren, and five great-grandchildren that will live on forever, and every time you think of Nanny, you will feel her love.
In the later years, some of us had to move away, but never left Mom & Dad's love behind. We made sure, though far away, they were involved in the grandchildren's lives as much as possible by talking every day, visiting as often as possible and never forgot any occasions to send a gift or pictures. We were very fortunate & thankful for the special bond Mom had with her niece Catherine, and her husband Steve. She loved them both and spoke fondly of them often. After Dad died, Catherine made sure Mom was never left alone at Christmas time or any other family occasions. Mom & her shared a special love for each other. We are so thankful & has brought us all so much comfort through the pain of losing mom when we couldn't be there, that she was holding her hand, surrounding her with love & peace.
Although we are deeply saddened & devastated by Mom's sudden passing, we take comfort that she is now in Dad's loving arms once again and has reunited with her parents and all other loved ones who have passed before her. Mom may be gone from this earth but will be lovingly remembered by her family from the Lane, Fowler, and Flaherty families, and her many friends that she made throughout the years. Although too many to list by name rest assured, we are forever grateful as mom was also, that you were an important part of her life.
