Mary Rosalita McCarthy (nee Hayes)

October 19, 1945 - August 29, 2026

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our much-loved wife, mother, grandmother, sister, sister-in-law, and aunt, Mary Rosalita McCarthy.  Passed away on August 29th at the Health Science Center in the presence of her family.

Predeceased by her parents: Clarence and Gertrude Hayes; mother-in-law: Rita McCarthy; brothers-in-law: Jerry McCarthy & Gordon McCarthy, and niece Staci Rae.

Leaving to mourn with heavy hearts, her husband Mark. son: Dale (Michelle); grandchildren: Dylan (Olivia), Lennon and Presley; sisters: Ellen Burton (Bob, deceased), Pauline Ghaney (Bill, deceased), Regina (Dave); brothers: John (Marilyn), Clarence (Leeann), Patrick (Shelley), Edward (Kim); sisters-in-law: Anna Griffin (James, deceased), Rita Abbott (Len, deceased), Shirley Abbott (Eugene), Bernice Leonard (John), Marcella Dalton (Ron); brothers-in-law: Thomas (Lorraine), Felix (Ann), Edward (Betty Ann), Lawrence (Valerie); special sister-in-law, nephews, great nephew and nieces: Shirley McCarthy (Ron Smith), Jerry and Amber McCarthy and children Arabella, Gus and Andy,  Andrew and Ashley McCarthy and daughter Josie.

She was also very much loved and will be missed by her nieces and nephews from both the Hayes and McCarthy families.

Buds loved attending social events and family gatherings and enjoyed spending time with co-workers, friends, cousins and extended family.

She was especially close to her cousin, Rita, who lived next door and over the years shared many cups of tea and great conversations together.

Professionals called her Mary, to her coworkers she was known as Rose, but to her family and friends she was always "Buds", a name given to her by her grandmother Nanny Hayes, who, when she was born said that she looked like a little rose bud.

Buds was born in Cupids, the second of eight siblings.  She attended school in Cupids before finishing high school at St. Patrick's in Brigus.  She then began working at the General Hospital in St. John's.  It was during this time that she met Mark who would be the love of her life and best friend for the next sixty-one years.

Being one of the oldest, Buds had the opportunity to develop a special relationship with her dad who passed away at the age of fifty-one, and she remained close to her mother and spoke with her almost everyday until her mom passed in her one hundred and first year.  She was loved dearly by her sisters and brothers and had a very special and unique relationship with each of them.

Buds also had a special relationship with the McCarthy family and felt fortunate to have married into such an awesome family.

In the mid 1960's Buds moved to Toronto where she and Mark began their life together and where their son Dale was born.  For the next thirteen years they were always together, summers were spent at Oro Trailer Park with her in-laws, cousins and friends, at ball parks watching her son or family members play ball or visiting with her family.  During winters she enjoyed spending time at arenas watching Dale and her brothers-in-law play hockey.

In the early 1980's Buds and Mark decided to move back to Newfoundland to live in Mark's hometown of Colliers.  Buds continued to work at the Canada Revenue Agency and did so until she retired.

Together they lived a beautiful life, always by each others side, whether going up on the trailer or attending events at the rec centre.  They loved the lifestyle that only Newfoundland can offer and were blessed to have some amazing friends, especially Pad and Joan Power, Donna and Nick Cole and John and Isabel Curran.

Although Dale and her grandchildren were living in Ontario, they talked regularly and visited when time, distance and health allowed.  She loved them more than anything and talked about them with much pride.

At Bud's request, cremation has taken place.

A celebration of life will take place at a later date.
