Patrick Bernard
Connors
Aug 20, 1947 — Jun 24, 2024
Conception Harbour
Patrick Bernard Connors August 20, 1947 - June 24, 2024
It is with great sadness we announce the sudden passing of Patrick Bernard Connors, 76 years of age, at Carbonear General Hospital on Monday, June 24, 2024.
Born and raised in Conception Harbour, NL, Pat was one of eight children.
Pat moved to St John's with his older brother Greg at age 20 in 1967. It was there he began working with the Federal Government which led to a long, dedicated career with Statistics Canada. Pat led the Census for Newfoundland and Labrador from 1981 through 2016. He loved work trips to Ottawa and Halifax, but especially enjoyed traveling to all the small communities of Newfoundland and Labrador where he made countless new friends, collected a lifetime of stories, and built life-long relationships with colleagues.
Pat was dedicated to his community. From his younger adult years, he devoted much of his time to the Recreation Committee, Board of Education, and Town Council of Conception Harbour. He served as mayor of Conception Harbour in the 1970s. Pat was especially proud of his work contributing to projects that developed "The Overfalls", Community Recreation Facilities, the Ballfield, and the Marina.
Pat and Mary (Laracy) were married in 1970 and began building their home in Conception Harbour on Silver Springs Road. They finished their house in 1975 and the property, with sprawling gardens, spruce, maple, and birch trees, remained Pat's pride and joy. He tended to his lawn and gardens to his very last days. It was here they raised Neal from his early days playing in the sandbox to countless hours of hockey with his best friends just outside the back door.
Pat loved sports, especially hockey. Growing up he was a skilled softball and hockey player but it was the early mornings and nearly every weekend coaching Neal's hockey teams where he thrived. Some of his fondest memories were spending time at the rink with Neal and his closest friends. Hockey practices and tournaments took them from the Southern Shore and Kelligrews, across the island and to eastern Canada and the US. The only thing that rivaled Pat's wealth of experience with provincial Census data was his knowledge of hockey statistics, especially anything related to the Montreal Canadiens.
Pat also enjoyed the finer things in life: fishing, moose hunting, camping in Murphy's Waters, and telling stories around the kitchen table over a drink. He loved his friends who were as genuine and loyal as he was.
Pat is survived by his beloved wife of 54 years, Mary; son, Neal (Susan Mercer); brothers, Greg (Barb) and Joe; sister Isabelle (Ed) Meaney; and many nieces, nephews, extended family and friends. He is predeceased by parents Joseph and Elizabeth (McGrath); parents-in-law John and Frances Laracy; siblings Geraldine Wilson (John), Dorothy Courtois (Murphy), Marie Halifax (Bruce) and Joseph.
Visitation will take place at Flaherty's Memorial Funeral Home, 70 Conception Bay Highway, Conception Harbour, on Thursday, June 27th, 2:00pm - 9:00pm, and Friday June 28th, 2:00pm - 9:00pm.
