Shirley B
Petten
Jan 15, 1936 — Mar 6, 2025
Port de Grave
Mrs. Shirley B. Petten of Port de Grave passed away surrounded by family on March 6, 2025, after a lengthy illness, aged eighty-nine. She was pre-deceased by her husband Vernon Petten, her father Robert Badcock, her mother Emmie, and her siblings Vera, and Bob.
Shirley leaves behind her six children, fourteen grandchildren, and nineteen great-grandchildren, Ross and his wife Christina, (Jason (Carolyn), Ian (Charlene), Nicole (Gary) and Ashley (Mark), Joel (Shelby), Kyle (Hailee), Riley (Kathryn), Lucas, Paige, Natalie, Raquel, and Abigail), Iris and her partner Peter (Grayson (Tara) and Kai), Ina and her husband Rick (Philip, Rochelle (Marc) and Jocelyn, Ashton, Reeve, Owen and Leah), Ivy and her husband Wayne (Andrew (Andrea) and Brandon (Nicole), Lucas and Wyatt), Leverna and her husband Tony (Lesley-Ann (Judson) and Teri Lynn (Jason), Hailey, Annalee, Simon and Benjamin) and Blair and his wife Lorraine (Julia (Andrew) and Jordan (Allison)). She also leaves behind her sister Betty, her many nieces and nephews, and a wide circle of friends.
Shirley was born in Mercer's Cove, Bay Roberts, and she learned a strong work ethic early in life. She accompanied her stationer family to the Labrador fishery where she cooked for a crew and learned how to cure fish. She also cared for her younger siblings from an early age when her mother died young. Vernon Petten was truly smitten when he met the beautiful, kind, and capable Shirley Badcock.
Mom and Dad were married in 1955 and built a strong and loving relationship lasting more than 69 years. Mom devoted the rest of her life to her family and she worked side by side with Dad in the fishery both on the wharf gutting cod, and then salting the catch, and spreading the fish on the flake. There is rejoicing in Heaven today as Mom longed to be with Dad after his passing just a few weeks ago.
Mom loved each of her six children dearly and she showered us with love and affection. Each of us are forever thankful to have had a special personal relationship with Mom and are grateful for how she helped to shape our lives in the community through her quiet example.
Mom was an excellent homemaker and was never wasteful with money. She was well known for her cooking and her creativity in putting meals together. This was a useful skill because Dad would often invite friends to join us for a meal so Mom never really knew how many she would be feeding! They were always happy having a big crowd around the kitchen table in Hibb's Cove, often with pan fried cod on the menu.
"Aunt Shirley" to many, Mom would prepare a pot of soup or bake bread to be delivered when someone needed support in the church or community. During church Conventions a visiting Pastor would usually be billeted at the house. There was always an open door and a welcome chair in her kitchen. All will miss her.
A service celebrating the life of Shirley Petten will be held on Monday, March 10th, 2025, at 2:00 p.m. from the Pentecostal Tabernacle in Port de Grave.
