Shirley Poole
May 15, 1942 – March 13, 2025
Margaret "Shirley" Poole, cherished mother, loving sister, proud grandmother and great grandmother, passed away peacefully at Carbonear General Hospital on Thursday, March 13, 2025. She was predeceased by her husband, John; her sons, John Jr, Tony, and Jason; her siblings, Theresa, Kathleen, Nick, Tim, and infant brothers Guy and Daniel; her parents and her in-laws.
Leaving to mourn with fond and loving memories are her daughter, Peggy (Steve), her sons, Aiden, Terry, Jerry (Denise), and Ed (Jackie), daughters in-law, Alanna, and Brandy; her 12 grandchildren, especially Alicia, who had the pleasure of growing up with her Nan (and Pop) and was very close to her; her 5 great-grandchildren and another one expected in the coming week. She will also be fondly remembered by her siblings, Joe (Judy), Jim (Glynis), Mary (Gary), John (Bernice), Geraldeen (Jeff), and Clara (Dave d.), her siblings-in-law, Stan and Yvonne and her many other extended family members and numerous friends.
Shirley was a devoted wife and mother to eight children. She married young and spent many years raising her seven sons and one daughter. Her days were spent in the cove, cooking, cleaning, doing laundry and caring for her family. Even with a large family, Shirley still found time for her church community. She attended Mass regularly and was always available to help at parish functions. Shirley had a deep faith and was devoted to St. Anne whom she called on in her time of need - Shirley was devastated by the loss of her husband John in 2000 and later in life by the loss of her three sons, each taking a toll on her. It was her faith that kept her going. She was a strong woman who through it all still managed to keep her sense of humour and her zest for life.
The family would like to thank the staff and management of Callingwood Downs Retirement Residence for their care and support during her time there since 2017. Thank you to all the doctors and nurses who tended to Mom during her many visits to Carbonear Hospital and last but definitely not least, a very special thank you to Denise Poole – we don't know what we would have done without you. Your endless support and patience tending to our Mom has been immeasurable – we can't thank you enough.
