Joe started his career in the funeral services profession with James J. Hickey Memorial Funeral Home, Kelligrews where he completed his 40 hour observation as a pre-requisite for the funeral service education program. He graduated from the Funeral Services Program at Kingstec Community College, Kentville, Nova Scotia in 1996. He was the recipient of the Arbor Ethics Award. He completed his funeral director apprenticeship at Noel's Funeral Home, Carbonear and his embalmer apprenticeship at Barrett's Funeral Home, St. John's. Joe is a licensed Funeral Director and Embalmer in the Province of Newfoundland Labrador.
